Rappan Athuk: Any guides/Tips for players?
Answers that followed were pretty clear ...
1)
As someone who has read them, here are some suggestions:
1. Have your wits about you.
2. Pay attention to detail.
3. Divining spells are your friend.
4. Teamwork is very important to success.
5. Creativity will be rewarded.
6. Know when to run.
7. Know when NOT to run.
8. Two clerics would help...
9. Hell, two of everything would help
10. Don't go nuts if your character dies. It's a killer dungeon to say the
least. People have web sites with graveyards of how characters died in it.
2)
RA is *not* meant to be cleared one level at a time. If you think in terms of trying to "clear" the dungeon, plan on going through characters fast.
Don't go in thinking that it gets progressivily harder the lower you get, or that the upper levels are the easiest. There are killer encounters on the upper levels and easy encounters on the lower levels.
Don't believe that every encounter will be perfectly balanced for whatever the hell level/class/number in party you may have. Regardless of what the monsters you encounter look like.
If you aren't prepared to have your character die, don't take them into Rappan Athuk. It isn't called the Dungeon of Graves for nothing. As a matter of fact, if you aren't prepared to have your *backup* character
die, don't go into RA.
Don't look on a Total Party Kill as a Bad Thing, think of it as a learning experience.
Getting into and out of Rappan Athuk (dead or alive) is meant to be a serious challenge to both player and character, something most modules are not these days. Don't be discouraged, it isn't easy, it isn't supposed to be easy. But, if you can do it you truely have something to brag about. After all legends are told about heroes.
3)
Try to bargain a bulk rate with your local pine box seller. I wish I had some better advice for you, but this module is just a killer.
4)
...
Then again, it might be that this is just a backup scenario for when my other one goes awry ...
