I installed BATTLEFIELD 1942 today and had some probs...
After installing the game, I tried to start it up and ... it crashed back to the desktop !
I remebered having the same problem with the multiplayer demo (before applying a patch)
so it must be the 60Hz problem.
Some people don't even notice the difference, but I hate a 60hz flickering screen. I use at least 85Hz on most resolutions, resulting in a flicker-free picture.
I have never understood why people need 70fps, while their screen only freshes up 60 times per second anyway...
Not nice finding out that I needed a patch for this when coming home with a brandnew game.
The solution : bf1942_retail_path_v1.1 this patch can be downloaded via
http://www.ea.com/eagames/official/battlefield1942/home.jsp

After applying the patch ... nothing happend !(same crash)
The supplied readme.doc tells me I have to look for the file VideoDefault.con in the Settings
subdirectory. In this file (ASCII) you have to change the parameter: renderer.allowAllRefreshRates,
which has a default value of 0, to 1.
OK, the game starts ! lets rock !
But then, I noticed, the game speed slowed down, almost to a stop, the moment there is some nearby action.
Impossible to play ! (hey !, the multiplayer demo did work fine ?!)
(strange, moving down the resolution didn't gave me much more game speed)
My machine : 1800 Mhz, geforce 3 ti 200, 256 Mb ram, and XP home edition.(yes, a medion pc from ALDI)

I searched through the internet forums and found lots of people having the same probs...
One of them gave me the solution : BATTLEFIELD 1942 slows down significantly because of some settings in
the SOUND option and the AI settings (artificial intelligence of the bots).

After some experimenting, I then changed the following settings :
In the sound option : the default setting is 44Khz, I have put it down to 11Khz, (stills sounds fine with me)
The sound detail : Medium.
also I turned on hardware acceleration (page 2 in the sound options).
Then in single player (instant battle) there is the AI setting : default it is set to 20% of cpu,
I went down to 10% (sorry, bots are more stupid, but cpu is happy).
I also changed the number of bots, down to about 150%.
As for video, the overall video performance : Medium
view distance : 95%
and I use this resolution : 800X600X32@85hz
Someone also suggests to put in an extra 256Mb ram (this, however is not supplied with the game... )

Having done these changements to the settings, the game finally works fine and still looks great !
This game is very good ! (apart from the looooong loading times before you can play it)

Hope this info is usefull for somebody !

I still think it's a bloody shame that they release a game that has this lots of bugs. Everybody should be able to play the game at its full potential (if they have a computer for it that is - but this looks to be the case). If you are unable to, you should return it to the shop, or mail EA about your problem. They should release a patch for such a serious malfunction !

I still think it is strange that the demo worked fine, and the full game doesn't.

Sounds as if you have to be quite some wizz with editing settings manually to get it working ... indeed a shame that games are being set to 'gold' status to quickly lately. Must be the publishers who keep pushing the creators to tighter deadlines ...

Just to give you an idea, almost within a week after a game is in the store there is one or more patches for the game. On the other hand, it's good to know that they're trying to fix it quickly
