PAIZO PUBLISHING ENTERS JOINT AGREEMENT WITH LUCASFILM, LTD & WIZARDS OF THE COAST TO PRODUCE STAR WARS INSIDER
New Publishing Group to Manage the Star Wars Fan Club;
Star Wars Insider Expands to Publish Eight Times Per Year
July 8, 2002 (Renton, WA.) Paizo Publishing, LLC today acquired the license for the Star WarsÔ Fan Club and Star WarsÔ Insider magazine in a joint agreement with Lucasfilm, Ltd. and Wizards of the Coast.
Under the new arrangement, Lisa Stevens will become the President of the Star Wars Fan Club. Stevens, a pioneer who helped start White Wolf (Vampire: The Masquerade) and Wizards of the Coast (Magic: The Gathering), is a well-known Star Wars collector. "We will continue to focus on building a community that is engaging to the fans in the Fan Club. We've surveyed a cross-section of fans about what they want in a club and we're going to work to make some exciting things happen in the near future." In addition to publishing a members-only newsletter on a quarterly basis (mailed with Star Wars Insider), new member privileges and services are planned.
Johnny L. Wilson, President of Paizo Publishing, LLC and former Group Publisher of Wizards of the Coast Periodicals, stated, "With Star Wars Insider, we've made positive strides and there is more to come. We're going to increase the frequency to eight times per year, and experiment with new layouts and features while maintaining our traditional coverage."
The transfer was announced in a joint agreement between Lucasfilm, Ltd., Wizards of the Coast (a division of Hasbro:HAS) and the new company, Paizo Publishing, LLC. Veterans of both the magazine and game industry, the founders of Paizo Publishing intend to place a primary focus on publishing high quality magazines. The current creative and production teams for Star Wars Insider will remain intact, including Editor-in-Chief Dave Gross and Art Director Scott Ricker.
To accommodate the more aggressive publishing schedule for Star Wars Insider, Star Wars Gamer will cease publication. Star Wars Insider will inherit the original fiction that appeared in Star Wars Gamer. "We are excited because this will make the original fiction accessible to a wider audience," said Lucy Autrey Wilson, Director of Publishing for Lucasfilm. The first piece of fiction to appear in Star Wars Insider will be the conclusion of a long-running serial by J. Gregory Keyes. Though the serial started in Star Wars Gamer, readers of Star Wars Insider will be able to catch up on the serial on www.starwars.com (http://www.starwars.com) before reading the final episode in Star Wars Insider #62.
The adventures for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game that were featured in Star Wars Gamer will continue on a regular basis in the Polyhedron section of Dungeon Adventures magazine also published by Paizo Publishing. Kyle Hunter, former Art Director of Star Wars Gamer, has just taken the reins of Dungeon Adventures and looks forward to working on Star Wars adventures, once again.
Star Wars Gamer subscribers will have several options. Starting with Star Wars Insider #62, the remaining Star Wars Gamer issues can be transferred to a new Star Wars Insider subscription or added to an existing membership or subscription. Subscribers can also opt to have their remaining issues transferred to a Dungeon Adventures subscription so that they will be assured of new Star Wars roleplaying adventures in the coming year. Naturally, there will also be the option of canceling their subscriptions and requesting a refund of the remaining funds.
"All of us who have worked on Star WarsÔ Insider are tremendously excited about starting a new company to do what we do best," said Wilson. "We're proud of what we've accomplished already with the magazine and we're confident that we can raise the bar even higher over the next two years. We expect to work even closer with Lucasfilm than we have to date. That will certainly pay dividends for the magazine and for all the fans we serve."
Paizo Publishing, LLC is the publisher of Star WarsÔ Insider, DragonÒ, and Dungeon AdventuresÒ magazines under license from Wizards of the Coast and Lucasfilm, Ltd.
